Bali Indonesia, WARTAGLOBAL.id - UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said this was driven by the annual sailing season which occurs in December so that the waters in the Andaman Sea are relatively calm. This condition also allows refugees to sail from Bangladesh to certain countries such as Indonesia.
"We can't predict what will happen in December, but if we look at last year, 2022, the last three months were the busiest," Baloch said.
UNHCR in a statement said that the Rohingya ship that had just stranded in Sabang City, Aceh on Saturday (5/12/2023) early morning was carrying around 150 Rohingya people.
This brings the total number of Rohingya who fled across the Andaman Sea by boat to 3,722 people so far this year, according to UNHCR, Tuesday (5/12/2023).
In its statement, UNHCR said it had also received several reports about two more ships still underway, with a total of around 400 passengers on board.
